Things to do near Monterey
Carmel-by-the-Sea is a charming coastal town with plenty to offer, but if you have some extra time, be sure to explore the surrounding Monterey Peninsula. Here are a few ideas for things to do:
Big Sur: Take a scenic drive along Highway 1 to Big Sur, a stunning stretch of coastline with dramatic cliffs, redwood forests, and hidden beaches. Stop at McWay Falls, a waterfall that cascades directly onto the beach.
Monterey Bay Aquarium: Discover the wonders of the ocean at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. One of the best aquariums in the world, it’s home to thousands of marine animals, including sea otters, jellyfish, and sharks.
Scuba diving in Monterey Bay: Explore kelp forests teeming with life, including sea otters, seals, and a variety of fish species. Encounter giant Pacific octopuses, elusive sharks, and even the occasional whale. With its diverse marine ecosystem, Monterey Bay is a must-visit for scuba enthusiasts of all levels.
Cannery Row: John Steinbeck classic novel, “Cannery Row”, is set in the city's historic Cannery Row district, once a bustling hub of the sardine canning industry. Today, Cannery Row is a vibrant waterfront area with shops, restaurants, and museums. Take a stroll along the boardwalk, visit the Steinbeck Center, or enjoy a meal at one of the many seafood restaurants. It’s touristy but fun!
17-Mile Drive: Take a scenic drive along the 17-Mile Drive, a picturesque route that winds through Pebble Beach, Carmel, and Pacific Grove. Stunning ocean views.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve: Explore the underwater world at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, a popular spot for kayaking, snorkeling, and diving
Wine Tasting: Visit one of the many wineries in the Monterey Wine Country, located just inland from the coast. Sample a variety of wines.
Monterey Bay Jazz Festival; If you’re planning on staying a little longer, go to the biggest jazz festival in the world! It starts exactly a week after our wedding.
Esalen: One of our favorite places for late night hot springs built into a cliff right above the pacific ocean. This location is by reservation only. Generally folks visit for a weekend or weeklong class. They also have drop in hot spring passes most days that sell out right when they open in the morning.
Whether you're a nature lover, a history buff, or simply looking to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery, there's something for everyone on the Monterey Peninsula. It’s one of our favorite places in California.
